A Galveston landmark, reborn after the storm.
The Sandpiper has stood at Stewart Beach and Ferry Road since 1962.
First a motel, then a hurricane, then a resort.
The Sandpiper Motel opened at the east end of the Seawall in 1962, 68 rooms across the road from Stewart Beach, and was a Galveston landmark for 45 years. In September 2008 Hurricane Ike came ashore here and ended that chapter.
Two years after Ike, the same family that had run the motel rebuilt the property from the ground up as an RV resort: 43 landscaped full hookup sites on level concrete pads, six guest rooms, and an infinity pool and hot tub that look across the Seawall at the Gulf. The 1963 office building survived and is now the clubhouse. The resort is proud to be re-invented and reborn at the same address.

The bird on the sign.
A sandpiper, head down, bill to the wet sand, the way sanderlings work the surf line at Stewart Beach every morning. It has been on the sign since the motel years and it is still the mark, white on sea green.
The East End is a good place to watch them. The beach wraps around toward the ship channel, the Bolivar Flats sanctuary is across the water, and FeatherFest brings birders to the island every April.
